Remembering David Lowther (7th January 1931- 8th July 2015)

We are sad to announce that one of our members, who also contributed to our voluntary work, has died suddenly.

David's last public appearance was actually at our AGM on 26 June. Recently he had not been particularly well, but none of us expected his sudden death - alone in his Marchmont flat. His funeral took place at Mortonhall Crematorium on 22 July, led by the Very Revd Dr Graham Forbes, CBE, Provost of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, where David was a steward. There were many people there, not just his family from 'down south', but also friends from his tennis club, St Mary's Cathedral, and FoMBL, among others. He loved music, and was also a faithful Friend of the Meadows Chamber Orchestra.

David read Classics and Law at Clare College, Cambridge, and then served in the Colonial Service in Kenya. On his return to the UK he taught classics at several different schools, some in England and finally in Scotland, his last appointment being to the staff of Boroughmuir, where apparently he was also very active in helping with school sports. He was keen on cricket and tennis. David had many activities and many connections, and we shall all miss him.

There will be ‘special evensong’ in honour of David,to be held on Sunday 20 September at 3.30 pm, in St Mary's Cathedral, Palmerston Place, followed by a reception.
